What is Lucid Dreaming?

You might not remember all of them, but we have on average 3-5 dreams per night! They typically occur during our REM (rapid eye movement) phase of our sleep cycle which happens about every 90 minutes. You might remember only one or two of your dreams and, very commonly, you might not remember any of your dreams. However, on the opposite side of a spectrum you can have a lucid dream. This is a dream state where not only are the details of your dream are life-like, but you are aware that you are dreaming. What's more is that often times you can control what happens in your dream whereas in normal dreams your mind has the stirring wheel. Imagine flying in your dream and being able to control exactly where you want to fly to - that's lucid dreaming.

You might have had one before, most likely during childhood. This is because children tend to have more imaginative power as well as less mental restraints where they are able to slip into a lucid dream unintentionally. However, as an adult, this unintentional slips tend to be more rare.

It might sound wild, but there are actually people who practice lucid dreaming to the point where they can control when they have a lucid dream and what they do in that dream. Practitioners of lucid dreaming find this skill indispensible for several reasons. On average a normal person spends almost a third of their day sleeping. This is an large amount of time of our lives where we aren't doing much. Lucid dreaming allows people to live a life while they are sleeping. During this time, many practitioners learn life lessons during their dreams that they will later apply to real life or they might just decided to use it for pure enjoyment! It's an incredibly fascinating science which we will get more into the specific of how you can have your own lucid dream in the next blog.
