How Much Sleep Do We Really Need?



All of us have had those nights working on projects, finishing that last homework assignment, or even just binging Netflix where we stay up a lot later than we originally intended. There are days where I get 8 hours of sleep still feeling exhausted, and some days only getting 3 hours and feeling on top of my game. Whatever the situation is, I always find myself asking, how much sleep do we really need?


It is important to make sure not to undermine the importance of sleep. Sleep deprivation is a cause to 100,000 car crashes and 1,550 crash related deaths a year according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. On top of that it’s hard to be on your A game when you’re tired.


The CDC has a different range of sleep time for every age group. Adults 18 and older should be receiving at least 7 hours of sleep every night and teens should receive 8-10 hours. Though this is all situational, 7 hours of sleep may be just right for one person and not enough for another. The important step is experimenting with your sleep and find out what is best for you.
