Don't Lose, Snooze! Can You "Make Up" Sleep?


Wow, what a week! You've had five meetings a day, a screaming child who has been unhappy with you this entire time, and errands that have been keeping you on your feet and out of your bed. But its Friday and oh man this is perfect because you can sleep in a make up for all the lost sleep from the work week, right?

Unfortunately, it's not that easy. Just like everything in life, the key to healthy sleep is consistency. Your circadian rhyme, which is the natural cycle of wakefulness and sleep, is determined by the presence of day light. When it is bright outside, your body helps keep you awake. When it is night time, your body prepares to shut down for sleep. Of course, even though you are a all powerful work week warrior, you cannot control daylight.

While there is nothing wrong with sleeping in or getting some extra z's on the weekend, there is no way for you to "make up" sleep. Feeling more restful comes from getting a consistent 8 hours of sleep every night.
