What’s Inside a Mattress?

Finding the right mattress can be a stressful process, especially when it comes to the different types of foams and firmness. There are certain components however that you’ll find in any mattress no matter where you look! In this article, we’ll cover the materials found inside a mattress and what they do.

Coils- primarily made of steel, these are found at the base of the mattress to provide support for the entire system.

Cotton- used to create layers inside the mattress as well as the exterior of the mattress.

Flame retardants- for flame resistance, these materials are required in all mattresses due to US flammability laws.

Wool- bringing temperature regulation to the mattress as well as providing extra padding and plush to it.

Polyester Battling- a filling that is used in both pillowtop mattresses and mattress covers.

Adhesives- used to bind the layers of the mattress together. This is normally done on top of quilting in order to ensure a strong bond between all layers.

Foam- one of the most important and picky parts. This is the one primarily involved in temperature regulation and comfort. This includes types like memory foam, polyurethane foam, and many others.
