The Different Color Noises

Previously we discussed white noise and how it can be used to relax and help with sleep, but that’s just one part of the many colors of noise! While we can’t “see” noise, it exists on its spectrum, and on that spectrum we can find different colors of noise that may be able to help you rest better.

Pink- pink noise focuses on the lower frequencies and dulls the high frequency sounds, similar to a lower pitched white noise. Pink noise is akin to the sound of ocean waves or leaves rustling in a tree. Researchers have found that pink noise helps with deep sleep and memory retention especially in older adults.

Brown- brown noise also known as red noise is a more extreme version of pink noise with the high frequencies being cut entirely with complete emphasis on the lower frequencies. Some examples of brown noise include strong wind or heavy rainfall. Its effects on sleep have not been researched in depth however for those with constant ringing in their ears, brown noise is reported to alleviate that stress as well as improving cognitive performance.
