Sleep Supplements: Ashwagandha

Known as a natural stress reducer, ashwagandha supplements have been popular for thousands of years, but on top of a stress reducer, can it be used to help your sleep? In this article, we’ll discuss what ashwagandha is in depth and what studies say its effects are on sleep.

Ashwangadha is an herbal medicine native to India and Southeast Asia that is incredibly popular in Ayurveda, an Indian medicine practice for natural healing. The name “Ashwangadha” is Sanskrit for “smell of the horse” which stems from the herb's scent as well as its ability to potentially increase strength. However more than anything, ashwagandha is known for its stress and anxiety relief properties. This is done through mediating different stress reactors in the body, such as lowering cortisol.

What does this all mean for sleep? Through studies done by the National Library of Medicine, they found that participants tend to fall asleep faster and described their sleep quality as 72% better after six weeks. While studies are still coming out regarding ashwagandha in particular, so far indications are leaning towards it being helpful to falling asleep, and having better quality sleep.
