How Often Should You Wash Your Sheets?

When your head hits the pillow every night, part of it stays when you get up in the morning. Dead skin cells, oil, and sweat left behind after a night of rest can affect your skin and is a perfect home to dust mites if you don’t wash your bedsheets often! In a 2017 survey by Coyuchi, they found that only 44% of Americans wash their sheets once or twice a month and an average of 25 days between washes. If you find yourself in this category, here’s how often it is recommended to wash your sheets!

On average, people shed 1.5 grams of skin every night, this alone can feed up to 1 million dust bites! To avoid this and all the complications with it, the Good Housekeeping Institute, they recommend you wash your sheets at least once every 2 weeks, but if you sweat more at night, they recommend upping it to once a week. If you are allergic to dust mites, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation recommends washing your sheets every week with water that is at least 130 degrees Fahrenheit.

While your mattress sheet should be washed at least every 2 weeks, make sure you wash your pillow sheets every week! This is the largest area of dead skin build up and failure to maintain cleanliness can lead to acne development and bed bugs.
