Previously, we began discussing the history of the mattress, from the early caves of South Africa to the palm leaves used by the ancient Egyptians. In this second part, we will continue discussing the history of the mattress and how they came to offer the comfort and support we enjoy today.
The Romans took the next improvement of mattress designs. Wealthier citizens would stuff their mattresses with wool, feathers, and hay while placing them on wooden frames, beginning to take resemblance to our modern beds. They also valued hygiene and introduced removable mattress covers which were washed and replaced.
During the Middle Ages, mattresses became more extravagant with the wealthy. Stuffed with materials such as feathers, wool, and down, they provided greater comfort. Covers also began to use velvet or silk for the wealthy. During the Renaissance, the box spring was introduced which was a significant advancement in providing comfort and support for the mattress. During this period, people began to understand more about the importance of sleep and how it impacts health and performance, marking this period as a pivotal transition point towards the modern mattress.
