History of the Mattress (Part One)

Updated: Oct 3

The mattress, an essential item that we lay on every night for a restful sleep. But before there were memory foams, temperature control, and all kinds of new technology, there are thousands of years of rich history on how the mattress evolved into what we have today. In this first part, we will begin discussing the history of the mattress and how they came to offer the comfort and support we enjoy today.

All the way back in prehistoric times, early humans adopted the idea of a mattress through sleeping on simple piles of leaves, straw, or animal skins to create a softer surface than the ground. The oldest known mattress made up of plants was found in a South African cave dating over 77,000 years ago. While elementary, it would be the start of what would come later.

Fast forward to the ancient Egyptians, they were among the first to decide to elevate the mattress from the ground. They were mostly filled with straw and palm leaves which gave better ventilation for the heat. Wealthier Egyptians used gold and finer textiles in their beds, marking the beginning of luxurious sleeping settings.
