Diet and Sleep

When we think of eating and diet, we primarily think of it as a means to gain energy throughout our day, but it is also important to think about how it contributes to our rest! Beyond when you eat and how you time your meals, the content of what you consume can indicate much of how you sleep. In this article we will discuss how certain nutrients impact your sleep and how you can maximize those in your diet!

To begin, it's important to note foods and drinks that can hinder sleep. The biggest disruptors being caffeine and alcohol. While coffee and tea can seem obvious to avoid before bed, certain foods can have caffeine in them that you may not realize, one popular one being chocolate! Make sure to read the label of your food and drink before you have it, you may be surprised.

One great nutrient to look for to aid sleep is an amino acid called tryptophan, which helps produce sleep inducing serotonin. Lean meats like chicken and turkey as well as tofu and nuts contain high amounts of this. Overall, having a balanced diet is a good indicator of getting healthy sleep!
