How to Sleep Better (Part 1)

Crazy enough, sleep is so important that we should be spending a third of our lives doing it. It’s the time in which our brain decompresses from the day and forms memories. It’s when our body heals itself and digests our food. It’s also how our soul feels refreshed and ready for the next day. While we’re seemingly not doing much while we sleep, it might be our body’s most productive time and a huge contributor to our overall health. So, can we do it better and get more of it? In this five-part series, we will take you through tips and tricks to count more sheep in your dreams:

Tip #1: Set a consistent sleep schedule:

You’ve probably heard of this one and yes…we mean on the weekends too. You’ve might have heard of the phrase “you are your habits” which is the perfect saying for this case. Our bodies are wired for routine. Most of its default functions are based off of what it is used to doing during certain hours of the day after certain activities. There is so much subconscious action that is driven by habit that we can use our natural programming to sleep better. By setting small range of time you sleep every night will help signal to your body when to produce the sleepy hormones that allows for z’s. If you give yourself an hour/hour and a half range, this might be easier than setting a hard time. This will also make it easier to be consistent during the weekends when we tend to want to sleep later and wake up later.

Tip #2: Wake up gently:

We are all too familiar with alarm sounds. Even Android users get a jolt of stress when they hear an iPhone alarm go off accidentally. Waking up to these harsh sounds starts our day with alarm (pun intended) and adrenaline. While this can help some people wake up, it certainly isn’t pleasant. Instead, choose a more soothing sound and try to use light to help you wake up. Most smart lights have a feature where you can program it to fade in at certain times. Or purchase curtains that preserves your privacy but still lets in natural light when the sun rises.
