How much sleep do you really need?

Everybody knows that getting enough sleep is one of the best lifestyle habits we can adopt to significantly increase our quality of life, but how much sleep is enough? In this article we will be discussing how much sleep you need to be getting every night to ensure you are maximizing your health.

The amount of sleep you need is highly dependent on your age. While most adults need at least 7 hours of sleep, this baseline increases the younger you are, especially when you are growing up. For example, children under the age of 1 year old need 12 to 16 hours of sleep every 24 hours. This decreases to 11 to 14 hours of sleep between the ages of 1 and 2. These schedules begin looking closer to adults between the ages of 6 and 12 years old, where they need 9 to 12 hours of sleep.

Early adolescence calls for anywhere between 8-10 hours a night while adults look for at least 7 hours. As we continue getting older, we can aim for the lower limit of about 7 hours a night over the age of 65.
